At first I wondered if this product was inferior based purely on price ($1000 less than the comparable Garmin 296). I decided to purchase the 2000c anyways, and have been very impressed. The most distinguishable thing about the 2000c is the size of the screen. The unit is very easy to use, and provides all of the functions you would expect from a VFR unit. I plan to upgrade the software to include the terrain avoidance. I would definitely recommend pilots to give the Lowrance consideration when shopping for a portable.

I had the AirMap 1000. I sold it as soon as I was able to hold the color version in my hands. The color is brilliant even in direct sunlight! Your course to target is painted red, and railroads, water, obstructions all have their own colors. With color the info you need jumps out at you! It has everything you would expect, plus the pages are customizable allowing you to display the info of your choice. The WAAS capability puts you within 16' of your target. In the Chicago area, as I drive and fly, it's on almost all the time. Also as the final kicker, it comes with RAM mounting allowing it to be mounted in a variety of places in your aircraft and car. The mapping system, Jepps update, and updates from Lowrance are all done through your home pc. All of this is transparent and so easy for the most novice of computer users. Lowrance gets Thumbs Up! for this one.

I wanted to write a review for other pilots because this was a hard decision for me and I searched for any information I could get before I made my final choice. I narrowed it down to the Garmin 296, or the Airmap 2000C.
My concern was that the 2000C at 6.25" X 4.9" would be to big and not fit well mounted to the yolk or would block to much of the panel, but I wanted the biggest screen I could get. All my worries were laid to rest,in my C-172 this baby fits like a Glove! I absolutely love my Airmap 2000C and I could write a book about all of the reasons why. I will just highlight a few of them. First the 5" diagonal 256 color TFT screen is awesome! The ability to switch between aviation, land, or marine modes is incredible. Split screen moving maps, Compass overlay, and navigation maps are remarkable. The screen updates are fast! It has a feature were you just push one button and it will list all of the nearest airports and there distance to your current position, a great emergency tool.

My old monochrome GPS just wasn't hacking it anymore so after looking at all of the features on the 2000C for the price I purchased one. Have used the unit coast to coast a couple of times. Great color display, nice yoke mount, steep learning curve to remember all the super features. Bad habit of dropping WAAS just when you'd like to have it, like the last couple of miles to the airport in smog in LA. Great value fo the money! That big moving map with compass overlay is great! Can't wait for the software update for terrain and driving directions.

Good, even to a former Garmin user

Love the 2000c. I replaced an older Garmin III Pilot unit with the Lowrance unit. Transition from Garmin to Lowrance was pretty easy. Other reviews have said that screen brightness at night was a downfall, but there is a night mode and brightness setting adjustments in the screen menu. Not as convinient as just hitting a single button like the Garmin, but not a big deal to open a single menu. all in all, it is well worth the money.

I've tried Garmin 196, 296, 195, and various other units. All were good, but NOTHING I've seen matches the extraordinary clarity & presentation as Lowrance's AIRMAP 2000c. Honestly, it is quite amazing that such a robust GPS computer, with such excellent presentation & utility, could sell for such a reasonable price. You must check this device out. I'm purchased one for use in a helicopter, and it is performing like a champ. "Direct-To" features are well designed & highly selectable (you can select any city - anywhere, or state, country...you name it). There is no need to "re-orient" your city-region in order to expand your search for cities (as is required with Garmin). The software folks & hardware designers for this GPS apparently did their homework. This is a solid piece of avionics - and its viewability in direct sunlight is unparalled. Likewise, the screen is quite large, and the software writers chose a font size that is large-enough, and is easy to read (sans serif). Very well done, Lowrance! Sidebar: Be sure to buy the portable $48 "gel cell" battery (which comes with a nice logoized Lowrance bag) so you can keep your AIRMAP 2000c running for up to 10-12 hours, then re-charge at your next stop. AC-DC converter also works great. You can also carry your AIRMAP 2000c inside the "divided" jel cell battery pack. Also note, that Garmin delivers this product with a 512mb SD card (with terrain awareness), two well-engineered R.A.M mounting systems (one a yoke mount, the other a suction system - that does NOT move), a USB SD card reader, "Map Create" topo software (6 CDs), a rigid plastic protective cover for screen, and a soft fabric cover to cover both GPS & the attached screen cover (very nice). This is a very well designed product & it is clearly under priced. Buy one and enjoy an unbelievable product. You'll want to buy two. No kidding.

Astounding quality - Amazing presentation & user-friendly operation

Having used KLN-94, Garmin GPSMAP 196, and Garmin GPSMAP 296, the easy conclusion is that Lowrance's AIRMAP 2000c is easily superior - and vastly under-rated. The 5" diagonal full-color screen on the AIRMAP 2000c is stunningly clear - and has a multitude of various presentation modes: Day, High-Contrast (perhaps for Alaska operations?), Night, and includes a user-defined contrast & brightness scale that is very easy to adjust. In fact, ALL of the user-adjustable features of this device are easy to use and intuitive. As an EMS helicopter pilot, you will not find a better supplemental navigation system to provide back-up for issues like: Terrain Awareness (which is FAR superior to that of Garmin's GPSMAP - which "flags" trouble at the expense of covering the Garmin's small display), Airspace awareness, and Obstructions. All three (Terrain, Airspace, and Obstructions [i.e., antennas]) are presented in a vasly superior manner as compared to Garmin - to say the least. Likewise, the larger 5" display is big enough to give you a better Situational Awareness (SA) for the flight you've programmed. Also, Lowrance's "Auto-Zoom" feature just seems to make more sense than Garmin's; I can't put my finger on it, but it just flows with your trip, and shrinks its ranges in a smoother, more logical manner. Additionally, for helicopter pilots who need to proceed to a "Direct-To" position on Earth, there doesn't seem to be a better device than Lowrance's AIRMAP 2000c GPS. I have flown several day and night missions with this device, and I must tell you that its quality, and functionality nearly bring a tear to you eye. It just makes your job easy. What else can I say? There are many sidebar issues as well: (1) the 6-CD software that comes with the 2000c is exhaustive (all sectors of the US are included), (2) the unit ships with a non-proprietary 512mb SD card - meaning that you can increase the memory to at least 2GB - if you desire, (3) the two R.A.M mounts [one suction, the other yoke] are very robust and do not vibrate with the aircraft's movement, (4) small things - like the unit's screen cover & protective pouch...well, this is a fantastic value. Don't miss out on this high quality device, just because it doesn't have a G-name on its cover. Lowrance has truly done an amazing job with this device. You will be very impressed with its quality - and VALUE. Bravo Zulu, Lowrance!!!

Very useful as a backup

I have a 2000C as backup to my GNS430 in my Bonanza. It was upgraded as promised to terrain. The manufacturer provided mounts to a "standard" yoke (the RAM mount), which is USELESS in mounting to the Bonanza, but I suspect works in other brands. However, Angerole Inc (www.angerole.com) came up with a mounting plate solution such that the unit mounts to the inspection plate on the yoke more or less the same as a GPSMAP396. In that mode, used as backup, it is very useful. I have the GNS430 in my stack, and the 2000C on the yoke. The 2000C database does a better job with alerting restricted airspace. I find its CDI to be in some sitations easier to follow. It does flight planning just as well. Regarding a power source, you can't do it on batteries, they run out. The cigarette adapter is OK, but what would you do if you lost your electrical? I bought the "brick" battery which is velcroed to the floor in the midline. It will give you more hours than you have fuel in the case of an electrical loss or if your primary panel mount GPS/COMM goes south. Conclusion? The 2000C is a very useful BACKUP, but you should also have a good panel mount which also interfaces with your autopilot, GEM etc.

Excellent product and great price

The quality, price and features of this unit are superb. Along with everything that was said by other reviewers, I VERY STRONGLY recommend the optional backup battery kit. Not only does it come with a battery, it also includes connecting cables, a 120V charger and a padded carry case with extra room for the cables, and has a padded flap that folds down over the battery compartment so you can store and carry your GPS unit in there when not in use. While using the battery during a 1.3 hour flight, the voltage indicator on the screen barely moved from 12.2V to 12.0V. It's a great deal for $49. If you decide to use internal batteries, buy a set of NiMH batteries at an electronics store and use those instead of alkalines, which run out of power in no time at all and heat up due to the high current drain. Overall, Lowrance gives you extras that other GPS makers would consider "optional". For example, hardware for yoke mount and window suction mount are both standard with the GPS unit. This are things you'll need to buy as "extras" with units from some other manufacturers.

I am a recently licensed private pilot and this unit has great features and is easy to use. My flight instructor was very impressed with the unit and he uses a Garmin 496. I would recommend this unit to any pilot, it is a great value for the price.
