gotta have for serious cx country flying

Comments: I bought my 396 at osh and have used it since...only problems occurred last week (when boating fortunately) when it would power off when i tried to look at any weather...and we were in an area of intense thunderstorms. When flying home it worked fine...of course a cavu day...but when i got home i found a software update that corrected a problem that occurs with the weather aspect when the receiver is in the battery save mode (which i used while on the boat)...I subscribe to the 50 buck a month xm weather package and for 6.99 more have the xm radio which interfaces into my lightspeed 30/3G headset (another must have..better for me than either bose X or telex) for unlimited music, news, talk etc for long cx countries...This replaces my garmin 196 which had become almost a "no go item" if it wasn't with me. lol..well worth the price, in spite of garmins less than cordial approach to phone customer service...KML

Comments: After years of working with a competetive product that was a bundle of wires with software that crashed often on my iPaq, Garmin has brought the right product to market. The Garmin 396 is well thought out, supports all the available weather products from XM and provides you with 99% of the weather you will ever need while in flight. The integrated XM radio is a bonus that you will enjoy on longer flights.

Comments: If you fly any significant IFR or just want to avoid the soup VFR, this is the piece of equipment you have been waiting for. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, the monthly fees seem high. Regardless, having all of the weather information you need while enroute is priceless. Yes, this product is MUCH better than the competition. Dealing with an iPaq, Bluetooth, etc. is a science project. This is an integrated solution that works and works well. Highly recommended!
