Best Private Pilot Manual Period. After using many products including Gleim, FAA and Jeppesen for pilot training, the Machado book and matching workbook are by far the best available. The explanations are clear and the humor, though distracting at times helps lighten up text and avoid that textbook feeling. Loads of practical advice is included. You will still need another book for the flight manuevers as these are not covered beyond what's needed for the written exam. The FAA Airplane Flying Handbook would be my choice for this text. ~A.S. This is a pretty good book for not only student pilots, but for experienced pilots as well. We use this book to supplement the Jeppesen private pilot book as well as the many other materials that we use. Machado does a good job explaining difficult to understand topics. While I have yet to find any one book that adequately covers all aspects of being a private pilot, this one is a good supplement to other materials with a little different perspective on many of the requisite topics.

I have read through the book once & enjoyed it very much. It definitely filled my curiosity as to the basics of flying. The pictures/diagrams are a great supplement after reading the text. They go hand-in-hand with the text. I would recommend the textbook to anyone that has no idea about flying and is interested to learn the basic terminology & ideas of aviation. The Aviation Safety Reporting System excerpts are fascinating as they are actual experiences submitted by pilots. I have yet to put the information to practical use in flight. The only drawback is that the questions in the workbook accompanying the textbook are at times too simple.

I have to agree with the positive comments about Machado's book. The first thing I thought while reading it was "Dummies"-style. I love "Dummies" books. They clearly explain the concepts and identify the nice-to-knows and the must-knows. Machado's book does very much the same thing and it's sheer size ensures virtually everything is adequately covered. As for the corniness some may have reported, well humor is certainly subjective particularly when used as edutainment. If his objective was to write a comedy manuscript I might be critical. Since the objective is aviation instruction, I think it's masterful - nothing less. It's a must have!
